To what extent are political decision-making processes mediated? Based on this question, the author analyzes media reporting and the strategies and perceptions of parliamentarians in three decision-making processes in Switzerland. The "mediatization of politics" describes changes in the behavior of political actors and institutional processes that can be traced back to mass media attention. Ultimately, strong mediatization can lead politicians to adapt primarily to the demands of commercial mass media, which are primarily interested in conflict, drama, people and immediacy. This could challenge established democratic institutions and processes.
Examining the strategies and perceptions of parliamentarians gives an insight into the interplay between politics and mass media in a globalized and polarized environment. The results show that the mediatization of politics does not necessarily depend on the mass media, but above all on the strategic interests of individual politicians and their parties.
