The role of religion and religious communities is disputed in many countries, particularly in predominantly Muslim countries, but also in Europe. Last but not least, religious instruction is the subject of disputes.
What is its legal basis, in which institutions is it taught, who determines the curricula, who trains the teachers, what is its effectiveness? Do states seek to use it to strengthen their legitimacy or to use it to influence social forces on state policies? Does it trigger conflicts, amplify or mitigate them?
These questions are examined using the cases of Afghanistan, Egypt, Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, Germany, Great Britain, Macedonia, Lebanon, India, Indonesia, Israel, Tunisia and Turkey. The comparison of the studies shows similarities in the problem and conflict patterns, but also gaps in the secured state of research and thus desiderata for further research.
