Education is often at the center of ethnic conflicts. It not only determines the fate of individuals, but also of ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. Educational privileges are defended, discrimination is fought. Conflicts about education are often sharper than those about property and income, since many people accept being disadvantaged but strive for a better life for their children. Modern education is designed to distribute opportunities in life according to learning success, but not according to ethnic rank. Systematic educational inequality therefore leads to open conflict.
Educational conflicts in eight African, Asian and European countries are examined, as well as South Africa's and Malaysia's attempts to reduce ethnic educational inequalities. Models of successful conflict resolution through education are India, Switzerland and Canada. Quantitative analyzes show the importance of education for democratic attitudes and the importance of education funding for social stability. Finally, conflict-promoting and conflict-reducing effects of different education systems in divided societies are identified.
