The cities of Latin America are characterized by extreme social contrasts that are reflected in many areas of everyday life. Similar to other South American countries, the living conditions of different social classes in Brazil developed into a reflection of social inequality over the course of the 20th century. In the debate about unequal housing, the focus is primarily on slums and closed housing complexes of the upper class. Social housing and its history, on the other hand, have so far received little attention.
The study examines the complex relationships between state housing policy, socio-spatial segregation and the stigmatization of social housing residents. To do this, the author analyzes many different contemporary sources from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s as well as interviews with contemporary witnesses from the large residential complex Conjunto IAPI in Belo Horizonte.
